Project Ara is hiring!
Project Ara aims to create a modular hardware ecosystem--rivaling the mobile app ecosystem in pace and level of innovation--around smartphones in an effort to deliver the mobile internet to the next 5 billion people. It is a focused, fast-paced effort in the Advanced Technology & Projects (ATAP) organization that relies predominantly on external partners in order to harness the world’s top talent in each domain of expertise. The small internal, on-site team is responsible for articulating the product vision, recruiting new partners to the project, structuring partner relationships, managing execution, and overseeing integration. Senior Business/Economic Analyst
This person would develop an economic and business model for Project Ara and lead the development of pricing and monetization strategies, strategic budgeting, and expansion. A successful candidate would have experience developing complex quantitative economic models to drive business decisions. Specific skills relevant to this role include:
Understanding of economics of two-sided markets and platforms;
Strong knowledge of microeconomics;
Some familiarity with the mobile hardware industry;
Strong quantitative analysis and modeling skills, including Monte Carlo simulation;
Experience integrating consumer research into economic models;
Experience with the development of pricing models.
A Master’s degree in economics, business, or applied mathematics is essential, preferably from a top school. (An undergraduate degree with very strong quantitative modeling skills may be sufficient.) This would likely be a full-time contracted position based in Mountain View, CA.
Senior Platform Architect/Deputy Chief Engineer
This individual would help exercise technical oversight over the development of the Project Ara platform and prototype module and endoskeleton development efforts. This includes management of an ODM design team, oversight of prototype manufacturing operations, and manufacturing scale-up for a market pilot and subsequent global launch. Day-to-day activities would include, for example: design reviews of electrical and mechanical designs; schematic review of digital, analog, and RF circuits; creation and review of detailed engineering specifications and development plans for ASICs, SoCs, and other custom components; specification and design of custom test equipment; development of a platform evolution strategies; etc. A successful candidate would have experience developing complex electronics products, with mobile industry experience preferred. Specific skills relevant to this role include:
Sophisticated ability to design digital, analog, and mixed-signal systems;
At least modest ability to design RF systems;
At least modest ability to develop low-level software such as device drivers and firmware;
At least modest mechanical design skills;
At least basic familiarity with the design of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and systems-on-chip (SoCs);
In-depth understanding of modern data protocols such as USB 2.0 and 3.0, CSI, DSI, D-PHY or M-PHY, PCIe, etc.;
Experience with consumer electronics (preferably mobile device) testing.
A Master’s or Doctorate degree in electrical or computer engineering is essential, preferably from a top school. (An undergraduate degree in EE/CE with significant relevant experience may suffice for strong candidates.) Candidates are expected to have the maturity and independence of a manager, while being able to “get their hands dirty” in technical details. Significant travel, particularly to Asia, is likely. This would be a two-year term appointment or full-time consulting position based in Mountain View, CA.
Head of User Research
This individual is responsible for overseeing all consumer research activities in the lead-up to and during the Project Ara market pilot. She or he would develop and manage the execution of a research strategy to support marketing activities, to establish pricing, and to provide continuous assessment of consumer behavior and sentiment during the market pilot. This is a unique opportunity for an unconventional researcher interested in advancing the state-of-the-art understanding of consumer behavior in two-sided markets or platforms, especially for hardware. A combination of quantitative, qualitative, biometric, and other forms of research will likely be required to accomplish Project Ara goals. Specific skills relevant to this role include:
Deep expertise in user research for mobile or consumer electronics;
Experience with quantitative, qualitative, biometric, and other unconventional research methods;
Experience developing complex research protocols, particularly involving consumer behavior;
Working knowledge of sampling theory and methodologies;
Ability to create models of human behavior, particularly as they pertain to consumer choice, and develop research protocols to test model parameters and hypotheses;
Strong background in statistical methods and data analysis.
A graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., cognitive science, statistics, anthropology) is essential, preferably from a top school. Candidates are expected to have the maturity and independence of a senior executive, while being able to “get their hands dirty” in technical details. Significant travel is likely. This would be a two-year term appointment or full-time consulting position based in Mountain View, CA.
